Snagit !

This is a utility that permits capturing part of the screen. It is a commercial program available as a 30 day trial on the Web (use Google search for "snagit").

The file here is a downloadable executeable install program for an earlier version that was available for an indefinite trial.

Right-Click here to download this 2.54 MB file    (snagitF.exe).

NOTE: When I used right click to download this file and then attempted to install it on a machine, the installation failed with an error message that this file could not be executed. I then FTP'd the same file and was able to run it. Go figure. I will play with this some more, but for the time being the above file may not work. 3/8/2002

After right-clicking, choose "Save Target As..." (IE) or "Save Link As..." (Netscape) to save the file. Run this file on your computer to install Snagit. After Snagit is installed you launch it to make the capture available and then (unless you have changed the default settings) press ctl-shift-P to capture a screen. I prefer to set the options to capture a "Region". With this setting, pressing ctr-shift-p brings us a marquee-cursor with which you can drag to indicate the area you want to capture. This is not the default setting, and should be changed from default to this setting.

After you let the mouse button up from dragging (if your options are set to display preview, which is the default), you will see a SnagIt window with the captured area displayed. From here you can save to a file in a format. Usually the best format is either JPG (for photos or pictures with sliding shades of colors like photos) or GIF for clear, poster like, shapes and colors. JPG will always work. GIFs are usually smaller.
